Invisalign was invented 20 years ago by Zia Chishti. The person behind Invisalign is not a dentist but rather a Computer Science and Economics major at Columbia University. After he graduated from Columbia, he pursued an MBA degree at Stanford.
Although he wasn’t a dental professional, he had a Eureka moment while he was undergoing orthodontic treatment. He wanted to find a better alternative to braces. Hence, he came up with the Invisalign concept.
Chishti came up with the concept while he was in his dorm room at Stanford. He founded Align Technologies, LTD with three of his friends in 1997. A year later, FDA approved Invisalign. After that, Invisalign made it to the market.
In 2000, his company received over one hundred and 40 million dollars worth of investments. When Invisalign went public on NASDAQ after a year it already had a value of one billion dollars.
