Managing Dental Braces

It’s crucial for those wearing braces in Pompano Beach to practice good dental hygiene and to stay away from certain foods. Brushing your teeth at least twice a day is essential because insufficient brushing can result in enamel deterioration and damage to your braces. If you want to learn more about managing your braces, here are some tips you can follow.

Braces Management, Removal, and Aftercare

How to Manage Braces

To improve oral hygiene, interdental brushes and a water pick should be used to clean beneath the dental archwires. Orthodontists recommend that patients avoid sticky foods in their diets since they can cause brace separation. Hard foods and sweets should be avoided since they may harm the braces or the link between the brackets and the enamel.

Brace Removal

After your treatment is complete, your orthodontist will remove your braces quickly and painlessly. The bond between your teeth and the brackets is gently and safely severed. Squeezing the bracket bases releases the adhesive bond, allowing the brackets to be removed. After removing all bonding cement, your gums may be slightly irritated, but this will often go away in a few days with proper brushing and flossing.

Getting Well and Aftercare

A retainer appointment is scheduled one to two weeks after the removal of the dental braces. Occasionally, though, retainers can be made and applied on the same day your braces are removed.

Retainers, which are removable orthodontic appliances, are required during the “retention period” of orthodontic therapy. It is typically necessary for someone to wear the retainer 24 hours a day for the first six months after having dental braces removed. After this period, the retainer may need to be worn at night.  However, the orthodontist will decide on this.
